Sullivan Receives Education Award
The Honorable Edward C. Sullivan received the SUNYCUAD Educational Achievement Award for his significant contributions to public higher education in New York State. Pete Koryzno, past president of SUNYCUAD, presented Sullivan with the award during the SUNYCUAD Educational Conference in New York City on Wednesday, June 11, as part of the awards dinner program.
Sullivan was an outspoken advocate for accessibility and affordability to the State University of New York when he was chair of the Assembly Higher Education committee for more than a decade. A New York City resident since 1957, he won election in 1976 to the Assembly from the Upper West Side and was continuously re-elected to office until his retirement in 2002.
During his tenure in the NewYork StateAssembly, Sullivan helped to secure more than $2 billion in funding for higher education. He was relentless in his quest to provide all NewYorkers with the opportunity to attend college. In the mid-1990s, Sullivan led the opposition to the governor’s proposed cuts in SUNY funding. He was a strong supporter of the TuitionAssistance Program and the Higher Education Opportunity Program.
Fluent in French, he taught English as a second language for 15 years at New York University, City University of New York, and others. He earned a bachelor’s degree from the New School College in 1968.
Sullivan has received the United University Professions Friend of SUNY Award as well as the Achievement Award from the New York State Financial Aid Administrators Association.
